아들을 군대에 보낸 어머니의 애절한 모정을 주제로 한 곡.
하나뿐인 외아들을 군대에 보낸 어머니는
그 아들이 전사한 줄도 모르고 아들을 기다린다. 

어머니는 끝내 숨을 거두었고, 그렇게 속절없는 기다림끝에
어머니의 아들향한 애틋한 사랑은 슬픈 노랫말과 가락이 되어
오랜 세월 아일랜드 사람들의 가슴을 적셨단다.

우리나라로 치면 '아리랑' 정도의 곡.
아일랜드에서는 '장례곡'으로 쓰이기도 하며,
엘비스 프레슬리 장례식에서도 연주되었다고 한다.
